QUICK HITS:

♦ We aren’t getting an Ace Hotel here in Miami but the Indian Creek Hotel on South Beach is going to be renovated and reopening as an upscale hostel (note the errant ‘s’ in that word) that is owned by the same folks who own the Ace Hotel in NYC and Palm Springs.  But here’s the fun part–the Sydell Group’s properties include the following restaurants: The Breslin Bar and Dining Room, The John Dory Oyster Bar, No. 7 Sub, and others.  Anticipated opening date: Fall 2012.

♦ Omphoy.  That’s the sound we made when we learned that Michelle Bernstein is closing her Palm Beach restaurant, Michelle Bernstein’s at the Omphoy Ocean Resort.  Clean Plate Charlie, the food blog of the Broward/Palm Beach New Times, breaks it down.

Eater Miami reports that a new pop-up is going to open, courtesy of Giorgio Rapicavoli, formerly of 660 at the Angler’s and a recent winner on the TV show Chopped.  Located in Coral Gables, the temporary restaurant is called Eating House and it will operate out of Cafe Ponce at 804 Ponce de Leon Boulevard.  Check out the ‘sample menu’ here.

♦ Last but not least, Eater.com created this great graphic of nine “big name chefs” who have opened up restaurants in the Caribbean.  My favorite drinking game is to try to pin a tail on chef Michael Schwartz’s disembodied head.  Have at it, drunkards:

Wild Speculation: The Mystery of Restaurant Du Cap, LLC

January 18, 2012

The New York Times likes to “fact check” and do “interviews.”  That’s great and all, but not really our cup of tea here at MRPR.  Instead, we prefer rampant speculation (but we try to point out that we’re doing exactly that, so as not to suggest we actually know anything).  And here’s the latest exercise, [...]

January 6, 2012

It is always nice to see Miami receive accolades from the broader food community, something which has been happening with increasing frequency over the past several years.  So it should be no surprise to see M.I.A. representing on the ‘Saveur 100,’ an annual list of 100 restaurants, ingredients, people, and places that have shaped the [...]

January 3, 2012

QUICK HITS: ♦ Short Order breaks some really big news over the holidays, announcing that Chef Philippe Ruiz has left the Biltmore Hotel’s flagship restaurant, Palme d’Or.  Despite the freshness of the ingredients, something smells fishy here.  No transition from old chef to new? No three weeks’ notice?  According to the blog post, he is already [...]

The power rankings are compiled by a panel of voters: Food For Thought Miami; The Chowfather; Blind Tastes; and Miami’s Restaurant Power Rankings.   All point totals are out of a total score of 80, which would represent a perfect score. 2011 Dish of the Year

December 29, 2011

The end of the year means one thing: superlatives based on flimsy evidence.  And not wanting to feel left out, MRPR is pleased to announce its pick for dish of the year (and runner-up and honorable mention).  The rules are simple: the winner is selected from items consumed in 2011 that are found on a restaurant [...]
